Summer in the Garden

The tomatoes are ripening. The herbs are prolific. We have cucumbers and green beans. As the heat rises, we will focus on our okra, peppers, Malabar spinach, Roselle hibiscus, sweet potatoes, and eggplant. We’ll renew the soil with cover crops in the fallow beds and lay down black plastic to discourage weeds.  Summer in the Southside Place Community Garden is a time for us to slow down and consider the seasons ahead.

We will have no community activities planned in the garden until September 2026, when we will host another Music in the Garden.  Our biennial Outstanding in the Garden five-course dinner party will resume on October 11, 2026. We are planning to hold the second Christmas Market and tree lighting ceremony in December, but we cannot do so without more volunteer support.  On July 14 at 6pm, we will hold a Christmas in July meeting to discuss the plans for the next European Christmas Market in the garden. For those of you would loved that event, please email jbabcocktx@gmail.com to express your interest.

Garden workdays are held on the first and third Saturdays of each month, meeting at 9:00 a.m. during the hotter months. Residents interested in volunteering or receiving garden updates may join the garden email listserv by contacting sspcgarden@gmail.com
